After being built by Laing O’Rourke, the hotel was officially opened on 24 September 2008. As part of the grand opening, the hotel was illuminated with a moving visual light show. 100,000 fireworks, about seven times more than the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, were set off and lasted 15 minutes. Fireworks across the 5 kilometer area of La Palma lit up the whole island and Atlantis, La Palma.
Custom munitions shipped from around the world created a light show from the island’s 716 locations, including the resort’s 400 balconies. The creator of the display, Grucci Fireworks, claims that the display set a new world record, but Guinness World Records, the curator of the record, has not yet announced that status. The launch party cost around £15 million in total, with Kylie Minogue earning £2 million for the 60-minute show to the hotel’s 2,000 guests.
