Four Seasons Hotels Limited, now trading as Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, is an international luxury hotel and resort company headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Four Seasons currently has more than 100 hotels and resorts around the world. Since 2007, the majority owners of the company are Bill Gates (through Cascade Investment) and Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal (through Kingdom Holding Company).
From January 2022, Cascade Investment will own 71.25 percent and Kingdom Holding Company will own 23.75 percent. Canadian entrepreneur Isadore Sharp founded Four Seasons in 1960. While the young architect worked for his father, Sharp designed the motel for a family friend; its success prompted him to try to create his own hotel. He bought a large plot of land in a ruined area of Toronto and planned a stopover for business travellers; The Four Seasons Motor Hotel opened in 1961 with original investors Murray Koffler, Fred Eisen and Eddie Creed.
The Four Seasons built more hotels, including the 1963 a 4 million Inn on the Park, a two-story resort hotel in suburban Toronto that hosted Canada’s first disco. Expensive luxury became part of the brand when the company expanded to London. When Four Seasons was approached by a developer to build a hotel in London, Sharp designed it to compete with the city’s elite Old World hotels such as Claridge’s and The Connaught. The Inn on the Park hotel in London was opened in 1970. Architect Aedas was the main consultant.
